Bright colors, rotten smiles, and mischievous titles in bold block letters jump off the canvas, but it’s the hidden details and intensely personal small-print journals that sink their hooks in.
Sam North (formerly Sammy thrashLife) graduated from Georgetown Law before discovering art as an inpatient in treatment facilities for borderline personality disorder and heroin addiction. The result is work that’s expressive, raw, and therapeutic — for both artist and audience.
His work has been featured in galleries and other venues across the country, including a recent exhibition at the historic John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

“Things You Can’t Come Back From” is an 18×24-inch painting, created by artist Sam North in March 2019 in Sarasota, FL. The full text reads, “THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN’T COME BACK FROM but you won’t know until you die after a lifetime of trying – this is me trying.”
There are only 100 limited-edition prints of this painting. They measure 12×16-inches. Each is individually signed and hand-numbered by the artist. All prints are packaged with a backing board, inside of a sealed plastic archival sleeve and include a one-sheet with the artist’s statement (the story behind the painting). [This is where there’d usually be a link to read this painting’s statement, but it’s the only one I have no plans to ever put online.
