Bright colors, rotten smiles, and mischievous titles in bold block letters jump off the canvas, but it’s the hidden details and intensely personal small-print journals that sink their hooks in.
Sam North (formerly Sammy thrashLife) graduated from Georgetown Law before discovering art as an inpatient in treatment for borderline personality disorder and heroin addiction. The result is work that’s expressive, raw, and therapeutic — for both artist and audience.
Following a nine-year absence, 2025 marked North’s return to art and to his real name.
His work has been featured in galleries and other venues across the country, including a recent exhibition at the historic John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art.
North’s presentation may be evolving, but his commitment to authenticity, contrast, and crooked teeth remains steadfast.

Damn dude. Hate to hear about your earlier troubles. I saw you play with EDFR here in Memphis back in 2004 or 5. I traded a zine for one of your demos. Just outta curiosity, what city did you find it in? Also, I don’t know if you’re referring to a print or the original but (either way) if it didn’t come with the usual info sheet that I include and you want to look up the story behind the piece, you can find it in the blog entry dedicated to that piece (the actual title is “No Accident”).
